About Your Water

The water supply for United Water Toms River is derived solely from groundwater sources. Customers receive their water from 25 wells located in 4 aquifers or natural underground reservoirs. These include the Kirkwood-Cohansey Aquifer, the Piney Point Aquifer, the Upper Magothy Aquifer and the Middle Magothy Aquifer. The wells range in depth from about 50 feet to 1,875 feet. In the summer months, during times of high demand, customers may also receive water from an interconnection with New Jersey American Water Company.

A portion of the Cohansey Aquifer in the Pleasant Plains section of Dover Township has been associated with contamination from an EPA-identified Superfund site. Appropriate treatment has been installed on those affected wells. More information is available in our Consumer Confidence Report as described below.

Water Quality

At United Water we take great pride in our ability to provide you with drinking water that meets or surpasses all state and federal standards. We treat the water by adding chemicals to make the water potable and pleasing to the taste. The chemicals added to your water are:

  • Zinc Polyphosphate -- to control corrosion within the water distribution system and to minimize the aesthetic effects of iron.
  • Chlorine -- for disinfection purposes and to ensure bacteriological safety.
  • Lime -- PH adjustment to reduce the acidity of the water.
  • Caustic Soda -- PH adjustment to reduce acidity of the water.
  • Alum -- A filtering aid

The quality of your drinking water is constantly monitored -- before, during and after the treatment process. We also test the treated water in each community we serve and provide the results to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. United Water is required to sample our supplies for over 100 water quality parameters, including inorganic and organic chemicals, coliform bacteria, chlorine concentration and turbidity. We collected approximately 1,300 bacteriological samples in 2004 from our sources of supply and distribution system. These samples are used to monitor the effectiveness of our disinfection process. Results were well within regulatory requirements during 2004.

On December 17th, 2001, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (NJDHSS) gave a summary presentation of the “Case-Control Study of Childhood Cancers in Dover Township (Ocean County) New Jersey.” The report completed the study of possible risk factors for childhood cancers in Dover Township. The study, involving air, water and soil, cost more than $10 million and took six years to complete. The study is considered to be ground breaking in terms of its depth and scope.

In December 2001, United Water, Union Carbide Corporation and Ciba Specialty Chemicals Corporation settled out of court a suit put forward by 69 families of Dover Township. A joint public statement stated that:

“…the settlement concludes more than three years of dialogue … and was achieved without resort to litigation or admission of any liability on the part of the companies.”

“Ultimately, the detailed scientific inquiry failed to result in any agreement that any of the companies were responsible for the conditions that gave rise to the families' claims. All involved agreed that a settlement would best advance the community's interest”.

Emergency Notification

We take many steps to ensure the safety of both the raw water supply and the finished drinking water. However, we must be prepared for any emergency. There is a plan in place to notify you if an emergency condition should arise in the water supply. United Water Toms River will use radio, TV and newspapers to keep you informed. Poster and door-to-door written notices will be used when appropriate. You can also obtain information by calling United Water at 877 565 1456.

Consumer Confidence Report (CCR)

the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires water companies to issue an annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR). This report shows how the quality of your drinking water measures up to safe drinking water standards set by the federal and state governments. The United Water Toms River CCR shows that your water met or surpassed all the standards in 2004. The EPA also requires us to make a good faith effort to make the report available to non-bill paying water users, such as apartment dwellers. As a result, information about the CCR has been published in local newspapers, and is available at libraries and at our office on 15 Adafre Avenue, Toms River, New Jersey.

Our CCR provides detailed information about your water quality. You can download a portable document format (pdf) of the CCR for United Water Toms River. You can also download a copy of the CCR for our sister company, United Water Lambertville. To view or print, please download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader. You can also call our toll free number at 1 877 565 1456 if you would like us to mail you a copy.
