United Water Rahway

Who we are

On April 7,1868, an act to authorize the construction of the Rahway Water Works was approved. This act enabled the City of Rahway to obtain any land or real estate necessary along the North Branch of the Rahway River. Over the years the system has grown to meet the growing needs of the community. Today the plant produces an average of 5.5 million gallons a day.

In September 1999, United Water and the City of Rahway joined to form a 20-year public-private partnership for its municipal water system. The City of Rahway maintains ownership while United Water operates billing and collection, watershed, treatment and the distribution process. The city controls all water rates and capitol improvement projects.

Our parent company, United Water provides water and wastewater services to 7 million people in the United States. In addition to owning and operating regulated utilities, United Water Resources operates municipal water and wastewater systems through public-private partnerships and contract agreements.

United Water Resources is a subsidiary of Suez, a global leader in energy, water and waste services.

United Water seeks to be the premier water services company in North America. The "premier" designation is never ours to claim or own. We earn it only through the eyes of our customers, our employees and the communities where we operate. And every day we must earn it all over again.

Our corporate logo, the water star, symbolizes our mission to be premier. The individual drops represent what we strive to provide our customers--pure, clean water and stellar service.

United Water's involvement with Rahway has been an exciting project. The hard work and dedication by both entities have proven beneficial in terms of cost reductions and improved efficiencies.

United Water operates and manages the 5.5 million gallon per day water system while Rahway continues ownership of its facilities and sets water rates. United Water's efforts in overseeing the daily operations resulted in improved water quality.

As part of the contract with the city, United Water will perform approximately $4.5 million dollars worth of capitol improvements to the water system. The public-private partnership will save Rahway about $1.6 million a year and up to $32 million over the life of the contract. United Water will receive an average annual operations fee of approximately $2.6 million from the city over the 20-year period.
