United Water Reminds Customers to Conserve

WEST NYACK, NY, August 14, 2002 — United Water is reminding customers that drought conditions and water emergency restrictions continue to be in effect in Rockland County. According to Robert Iacullo, president of United Water New York, “We are still affected by lower than average rainfall. In addition, this extended heat wave has resulted in increased water usage. While conservation efforts to date have been helpful, it is important that Rocklanders continue to observe the restrictions.”

Iacullo noted that United Water has worked cooperatively with Rockland County officials throughout this drought emergency. Rockland Health Commissioner Dr. Joan Facelle declared a Stage 3 Water Emergency on March 6 that imposed the following mandatory restrictions:

The following is NOT allowed:
  • Watering of lawns
  • Watering of non-mulched gardens and landscapes
  • Washing of paved surfaces including driveways and tennis courts
  • Washing vehicles by hand
  • Using personal powerwashers/hoses to clean buildings, homes or decks
  • Operating leaky swimming facilities
  • Operating flow through fountains, artificial waterfalls, and reflecting pools
  • Flushing sewers or hydrants except for emergencies
  • Serving water in restaurants without patron request

The following is allowed:
  • Commercial contracting to clean buildings, homes and decks
  • Using commercial car washes
  • Operating swimming pools certified to have a leak rate of less than 2 gallons per day
  • Draining and refilling of swimming pools for repairs to maintain structural integrity (only once per calendar year)
  • Watering of clay tennis courts between 8 PM and 9 PM to maintain integrity of court
  • Watering public athletic fields daily between 4 AM and 6 AM

Residents or businesses that violate the restrictions would be issued violation notices and repeat offenders would be fined. To report a violation, call the Health Department at 364-2608.
