United Water Begins Water Quality Improvement Program

Work scheduled for California Road and Stewart Street

NEW ROCHELLE, NY, May 10, 2004
— United Water is continuing work on the first phase of a project designed to improve the community's water supply. This week contractors will begin to conduct test borings in the vicinity of California Road and Stewart Street in Eastchester. The company plans to construct a new peak capacity 50-million gallon a day (MGD) pump station at that location.

Chris Riat, operations manager for United Water New Rochelle, explained that the company is making these improvements to meet the standards of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act. “United Water currently purchases its water from New York City's Croton, Catskill and Delaware aqueducts. The Croton water supply does not meet the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements for filtration. In order to meet these water quality standards, the company must find a new water supply source. As a result, we will implement a comprehensive construction program designed to meet EPA criteria.”

Riat noted that the test borings will take about five days to complete. The findings will help determine soil and bedrock conditions vital to the design and construction of the project. The planned pumping station is part of the new water supply project which includes:

  • A connection to the Delaware Aqueduct in Yonkers.
  • A new transmission main from the Delaware Aqueduct to United Water's existing transmission lines in Yonkers that supply water from the Catskill Aqueduct.
  • A new peak capacity 50-MGD pump station (the Delaware Pump Station) in Eastchester.
  • Minor modifications to existing pump stations.

The test borings will create noise, dust and traffic conditions. "We've notified town officials and we will be notifying residents in the California Road vicinity,” Riat said. “We apologize for the inconvenience and we appreciate everyone's patience while we work to bring this important new water supply to the communities we serve.”
