United Water Delaware/United Water Bethel

who we are

Our History

United Water Delaware
United Water Delaware, formerly Wilmington Suburban Water, was incorporated in 1933. As the local population grew, the company purchased several small water systems -- the Delaware Water Supply Company, Arden Water Company, New Castle County Water Company and the Delaware Water Corporation.

On February 8, 1972, the Delaware Public Service Commission (DPSC) approved a merger between these small systems to form one operating entity with physically interconnected facilities. In April 1994, Wilmington Suburban Water merged with United Water Resources to become United Water Delaware. United Water Resources, based in Harrington Park, New Jersey, is the second largest investor-owned water services company in the United States.

United Water Delaware, a subsidiary of United Water Resources, provides water service to about 109,000 people within the state of Delaware. The company serves potable water as far north as the Pennsylvania/Delaware border to as far southwest as the Maryland/Delaware border. United Water Delaware provides domestic, commercial, and industrial water service and public/private fire protection in the New Castle County area, including: Brandywine, New Castle, Pencader, Red Lion, White Clay Hundred and the St. Georges Hundred.

United Water Bethel
United Water Bethel, formerly Bethel Township Water Company, was formed in 1968 to provide domestic water service and fire protection to Bethel Township and Concord Township in Delaware County Pennsylvania. These areas are adjacent to the northern border of the state of Delaware and have developed as a single geographic area. The service area is interconnected with mains from United Water Delaware and Chester Water Authority and receives water from both. United Water Bethel services approximately 6,000 people.

United Water Bethel is managed and operated by United Water Delaware and our office is located at 2000 First State Boulevard in Wilmington, Delaware. Both companies are subsidiaries of United Water Resources of Harrington Park, New Jersey.
