United Water Connecticut

United Water uses groundwater sources at all of its facilities. Various forms of treatment are used, such as chlorination, pH adjustment, corrosion control, air stripping and green sand filtration.

There are several well fields and water treatment facilities:
Two well fields totaling 3 million gallons per day (MGD) in New Milford, one well field totaling 1.5-MGD in Newtown and two well fields totaling 0.3-MGD in Woodbury.

United Water customers receive their water entirely from groundwater supplies. The utility has 53 active wells with sources ranging in capacity from less than 5 gallons per minute (gpm) to 1,060 gpm, with a total available supply of nearly 4-MGD.

Water Quality

At United Water we take great pride in our ability to provide you with drinking water that meets or surpasses all state and federal standards. We constantly monitor the quality of drinking water—before, during and after the purification process. In fact, we perform tests on more than 130 different substances each year. We report the results to state agencies as well as local health departments.

Our Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) provides detailed information about your water quality.

All of United Water’s water supply comes from groundwater sources. The water, as it naturally occurs, requires treatment to correct for conditions such as hardness (naturally occurring minerals that cause a white film on glasses and fixtures), excessive iron and manganese (naturally occurring minerals that cause discolored water and stains on clothing and fixtures) and low pH (caused by agents that make the water corrosive to piping). Further, United Water disinfects its water with chlorine to assure that there are no bacteria present in the water. United Water employees are fully certified to perform all of the chemical additions and monitoring required to deliver a safe, reliable supply of water. The effectiveness of all treatment processes are monitored monthly by the Connecticut Department of Public Health.

We take many steps to ensure the safety of both the raw water supply and the finished drinking water. But, we must be prepared for any emergency. So, there is a plan in place to notify you if a hazardous condition should arise in the water supply. The Connecticut Department of Public Health will use radio, TV, newspapers or mobile public address units to keep you informed. Posters and door-to-door written notices will be used when appropriate. You can also obtain information by calling United Water at 860 354 4118.
