US EPA AWARDS UNITED WATER FOR ‘OUTSTANDING’ OPERATION OF WESTERLY, RI, WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT

Environmental Protection Agency Praises Facilities, Personnel

Westerly, RI,  Jan 22, 2013,   3:00PM

The US Environmental Protection Agency has awarded United Water the 2012 Regional EPA Wastewater Treatment Plant Excellence Award for its “outstanding operations and management” of the Westerly, RI, Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The plant was nominated by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) to acknowledge the work performed over the years by United Water staff under the leadership of Scott Duerr, project manager and Paul Corina, Utilities Superintendent for the Town of Westerly. The plant can treat up to 3.3 million gallons of wastewater each day and serves a population of 23,000.

“We are grateful to the EPA and RIDEM for acknowledging the work we’ve done for the people of Rhode Island,” said Bertrand Camus, Chief Executive Officer of United Water. “We are proud of our people, our performance and the reputation that we have worked so hard to achieve over the 140 years that we have been in business.”

“The Town of Westerly and United Water are good partners, and that partnership continues to benefit the residents and businesses here,” said Steven T. Hartford, Town Manager. “We’re grateful to RIDEM and the EPA for acknowledging the hard work of the Westerly Wastewater Treatment Plant.”

The Westerly Wastewater Treatment Plant and its staff have received numerous awards in the past, including the 2009 Narragansett Water Pollution Control Association (NWPCA) award for Most Efficient Small Advanced Wastewater Treatment Facility, the 2006 NWPCA Safety Award, and the NWPCA’s 2003 Most Improved Plant in Water Pollution Control. Duerr’s awards date back to 1998 when he was awarded Operator of the Year by the New England Water Environment Association (NEWEA).

In addition to the Westerly plant award, this year’s awards include three United Water operators, Jason Beckwith (Jaffrey, NH), Tom Ciolfi (Bucklin Point, RI) and Scott Duerr (Westerly, RI).

In addition to the Westerly plant, United Water also operates the East Providence, RI, wastewater treatment plant; the Bucklin Point Wastewater Treatment Facility, which serves about one-third of East Providence, for the Narragansett Bay Commission; and the Newport and Warren wastewater treatment facilities. The company has earned several awards from the National Association of Clean Water Agencies and the National Wastewater Pollution Control Agency for operational excellence.
