United Water, a leading provider of water and wastewater management services and the US subsidiary of SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT, one of the world’s largest water and resource management companies, today embraced the United Nation’s World Water Day, which marks 2013 as being the year of International Water Cooperation, and issued a call for government leaders here to address head-on the growing challenge of maintaining water systems in the US.

United Water, a subsidiary of SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT, announced today that it had completed the sale of its regulated water operations in Arkansas for $27.6 million to Liberty Utilities Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp., a publicly traded Canadian company.  Liberty Utilities has water and wastewater interests in Arizona, Arkansas, Illinois, Missouri and Texas. 

The United Water Foundation donated $55,000 to Bergen County’s United Way Compassion Fund to assist people who were significantly impacted by Hurricane Sandy. 

United Water, one of the largest water services providers in the nation, made a Commitment to Action today at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Annual Meeting in New York that offers cities across the U.S. a new long-term solution to the challenge of meeting current and future water needs.

United Water announced that the Utility Workers Union of America Local 584 ratified a new contract with the company. Local 584 represents employees affiliated with United Water Delaware. The company provides water services to about 110,000 people in northern New Castle County.

United Water announced today that Nadine Leslie has been named president of United Water Environmental Services, the company’s contract services division. In this role, Leslie is responsible for overseeing the operations and management of United Water‘s nationwide contract operations.

United Water has opened a national command center in Boise, Idaho, to coordinate the company’s response to Hurricane Irene. 

United Water and the city of Indianapolis were recently honored with two Platinum Peak Performance Awards from the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA). The awards recognize the partnership’s contributions to environmental protection and the clean water community.

United Water officials announced today that the company’s Lake DeForest Water Treatment Plant in West Nyack, NY, recently received the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001: 2004 and 9001: 2008 certifications, demonstrating that the plant’s environmental and quality management systems meet stringent international standards.

United Water and the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) announced a partnership today to encourage people throughout the United States to properly dispose of their unused or expired medications in an environmentally-friendly manner. A major part of the campaign will center around the NCPA’s website dedicated to the program - www.DisposeMyMeds.org - that directs people to their local independent pharmacy where they can drop off their unused medications.

United Water officials announced that Anna Maria Delizeth Brennan, a resident of Hoboken, New Jersey, has joined the company as director of diversity and inclusion. In this capacity, she is responsible for providing vision, strategy and leadership related to the company’s nationwide diversity and inclusion program. Brennan will ensure that the company attains its goals and objectives related to employees, suppliers, clients and the communities it serves.

United Water and the City of Holyoke, Massachusetts, announced that they are the recipients of the National Council for Public-Private Partnerships’ “Distinguished Infrastructure Award” for the Berkshire Street Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Treatment Facility. The CSO facility was built through a joint effort between the City and United Water, which operates Holyoke’s wastewater system.

United Water and the Narragansett Bay Commission’s Bucklin Point Wastewater Treatment Facility recently received the Silver Peak Performance Award from the National Association of Clean Water Agencies. The award recognizes Bucklin Point’s outstanding compliance record in achieving excellent water quality during calendar year 2009. The Bucklin Point facility is owned by the Narragansett Bay Commission and managed by United Water through a 10-year public-private partnership agreement.

United Water announced that Patrick Cairo has been named senior vice president of corporate development. In this capacity he will oversee business development activities related to water, wastewater and waste services in the regulated and contract services marketplaces. He will coordinate these efforts with sister company, Utility Service, which offers long-term asset management contracts for water storage facilities with municipal and industrial clients.

The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) recognized United Water New Jersey’s Haworth Water Treatment Plant Upgrade with a National Design-Build Excellence Award in the water/wastewater over $25 million category. The award was presented at DBIA’s 2010 Design-Build Conference and Exposition earlier this month in Las Vegas, Nevada.

United Water announced that Water for People, an international, nonprofit humanitarian organization that focuses on long-lasting, safe drinking water resources and improved sanitation facilities in developing countries, recently honored Mike Post van der Burg and the late Pasquale “Pat” Radice with the prestigious Kenneth J. Miller Founders’ Award. The presentation was made during the American Water Works Association’s (AWWA) Annual Conference & Exposition in Chicago.

The New Jersey State Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has approved an increase in water rates for residential and commercial customers of United Water Toms River, which serves approximately 120,000 residents in Toms River, South Toms River and Berkeley. The typical residential customer, using an average of 5,300 gallons of water per month, will see an average bill increase of $6.75 a month or approximately 22 cents per day. The increase was primarily related to water system improvements and inflationary impacts on overall operating expenses, and will provide the company with an additional $4.9 million in annual revenue.

Utility Service Co., Inc., the nation’s leading supplier of water storage tank maintenance services, announced today that it has completed the acquisition of JPI Painting, Inc. of Poland, Ohio. JPI Painting is dedicated to the rehabilitation of water storage tanks, steel structures and silos – specializing in the application of linings for a variety of industries.

The Newtown Wastewater Treatment Plant, operated by United Water, was recognized for its operational and maintenance performance by Region One of the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The 2009 Excellence Award was presented to representatives of the Town of Newtown and United Water at the New England Water Environment Association’s annual conference.

United Water, one of the leading providers of water and wastewater services in the nation, today announced it had reached agreement with the City of East Providence, RI, for a 10-year, design-build-operate (DBO) contract for the city’s wastewater collection and treatment facilities, which provide service to roughly two-thirds of East Providence’s 50,000 residents.

United Water Pennsylvania today filed for rate relief with the Pennsylvania Public Utilities Commission (PUC) requesting a $5.35 per month or 18 cents per day increase in rates for a typical residential customer. The proposed increase, if approved by the PUC, would raise the average residential customer’s annual bill from $396 to $460

Bonds will help fund largest capital investment in United Water’s 140-Year history; one of the most technologically advanced water treatment plants in the US.

United Water New Jersey, Bergen Save the Watershed Action Network (SWAN), and Hackensack Riverkeeper have agreed to amicably resolve issues related to a comprehensive review of all company property since the enactment of the Watershed Protection and Moratorium Act, passed by the New Jersey Legislature in 1988. The settlement was approved yesterday by the Watershed Review Board, which consists of the Commissioners of the Board of Public Utilities, Department of Environmental Protection, and the Department of Consumer Affairs.

United Water announced today that the company has signed a five-year extension to its contract to manage the Gary Sanitary Districts wastewater treatment facilities and sewage collection system. United Water, whose contract ends May 31, 2008, has operated these facilities in Indiana through a public-private partnership since 1998.
