About Your Water
United Water prides itself on meeting and exceeding all regulatory expectations for clean water.
Water Supply and Treatment
City residents receive their water from the Jersey City Reservoir in Parsippany and the Split Rock Reservoir in Rockaway and Boonton. Together they hold about 11.3 billion gallons of water and cover nearly 2,000 acres.
The Jersey City Reservoir holds 8 billion gallons of water. The source for this water body is a 120 square mile watershed – the region draining into a river, river system, or other body of water.
The Split Rock Reservoir holds 3.3 billion gallons.
The treatment process begins at the Jersey City Water Treatment Plant in Boonton. We use coagulants and filter the water to remove impurities and microscopic particles. A small amount of chlorine is then added to disinfect the water. Finally, we apply corrosion control chemicals to reduce the chance of lead and copper dissolving in the water from household plumbing.
Water Quality
At United Water we take great pride in our ability to provide you with drinking water that meets or surpasses all state and federal standards.
Your water is constantly monitored—before, during and after the purification process. We report the results to state and federal agencies.
