About United Water Jersey City

United Water operates the Jersey City Water system through a public-private partnership with the Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority (JCMUA). Under the terms of the contract United Water manages the treatment plants, watershed, aqueduct, and distribution system and provides customer service, meter reading and billing services.  The JCMUA owns the assets and maintains responsibility for rates and capital improvements.

United Water has been the operating partner since 1996.The partnership has had a broad range of accomplishments during that time.

Here are some environmental highlights:

  • Reduced aqueduct water losses by more than 2 million gallons a day due to operating efficiencies
  • Resolved Consent Order for treatment residuals disposal
  • Achieved acceptable New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection treatment plant rating
  • Achieved Safe Drinking Water Act compliance with the Lead and Copper Rule
