A Rich Tradition of Reliability
The Jersey City Water Department was founded at the turn of the 20th century.
In 1908 Jersey City became the first public water supply in the nation to begin the practice of disinfection. By adding chlorine to the water supply, the city eliminated waterborne diseases such as typhoid and cholera. Other cities throughout the nation followed Jersey City’s example and today the United States has one of the safest water supplies in the world.
Jersey City’s water infrastructure is a key component in its drive for economic redevelopment. Since partnering with United Water in 1996 the city has seen improvements in water quality, service reliability, environmental compliance and rate stability. These accomplishments have been a springboard for economic growth.
Today, we continue our commitment to use to provide you with the highest quality water and service.
